The Wedding of Caterina de Medici to Henri II

This took place in 1533 and was performed by Pope Clement VII, also a Medici, uncle to the young Caterina. Henri and Caterina, only 14 years old at the time (though looking older in the picture), represented a powerful union between Italy and France symbolized by the presentation of the ring.
