Marriage of Constanzo Sforza and Camilla D'Aragona, 1475Due Gace in uno anello de ardente fochoDoi volunta, doi cor, doi fochi insegna Che siam congiunti in vincul de diamnte. "Two torches in one ring of burning fire Two wills, two hearts, two passions are bonded in marriage by a diamond." |
By the fifteenth century diamond rings had become an established feature of the weddings of kings and queens and the proxy marriages of their children. The invincible powers ascribed to the diamond with the symbolism of the ring made it the perfect symbol of harmony in marriage. This was interpreted in the pageantry devised at the marriage of Constanzo Sforza and Camilla d'Aragona at Pesaro in 1475 and is recorded in a series of miniatures now in the Vatican. The divinity Hymen, presiding over the marriage, is represented as a handsome youth crowned with roses and wearing a tunic painted with diamond rings and tongues of fire. | |
